Several characters threaten Macbeth rise to power. They are Malcolm, Macduff, and Banquo. Malcolm is naturally the heir; Macduff is has status and is good-hearted; and Banquo was told by the witches that his line would be king. Of course, that also puts Fleance as a threat to Macbeth as king.
