Atheists: how would you explain to a child about white, English speaking people believing a Jewish god?

Would you tell them something about Romans finding a better way to conquer the Pagan tribes of Europe than with armies; with religion instead? They used myths believed by some Jews to concoct Roman Catholicism and this eventually evolved in Christianity as we know it today? Something like that?
